Puppy Jail?

(Another Logo We Are Testing Out.... Thoughts?)

Every so often, Mark and I think, "Well, we have done a lot of these transports, I am sure we have seen it all." We could not have been further from the truth. This past week we were met with yet another new experience for us. One that is a little on the sad side both for us and the pup we were transporting.

This week we had the privilege of transporting the most adorable female bulldog mix whose name was Shein (pronounced Shane). The picture below does not even remotely do her cuteness correctly but you will get an idea. Her one ear had the cutest little brown polka dots on it and half of her face was pure white, with her speckled ear and a sweet brown spot around her eye. Adorable doesn't even begin to describe her.

When we signed up for this transport, we were told that she had to stay in her crate and COULD NOT COME OUT FOR ANY REASON. I am sure you are wondering why that would be.... well, Miss Shein was what we call a flight risk. Little Miss Shein was quite the Houdini and escaped not once but twice from her previous foster situation. Now, you know how Mark and I are about the rules when it comes to the pups we are entrusted with. What they say goes. If they are  NPOG (no paws on ground) that is because they are brand-new puppies and have not had their vaccinations yet. So we make sure they are not put down or come in contact with ANY other dog at all.

So, the fact that she was a flight risk made us go into survey and protect mode and made sure that there was no possible way she could escape. Knowing she was coming in a crate we had to take the bigger car for this transport and crossed our fingers it was big enough. We arrive to the designated pick-up area and low and behold it is our favorite transport driver, Anne, there to meet us! (We will get a picture with Anne next time so we can introduce you to her formally) She is always happy to see us pull up and we are always happy to see her as well.

She asked us who we were there for and she said now you know you are getting her in the crate as well right. We said we knew and she reiterated to us, FLIGHT RISK - DO NOT LET HER OUT OF THE CRATE. We acknowledged and agreed. She shuffles her crate to the door of the van. I backed the car up as close as possible to the van, opened the hatch, and shimmied her from the transport van to our car. Closed up the doors, put on some soft music, and we were off to her foster in Springfield.

We are cruising down the road and the poor little thing is terrified, crammed into the back of her crate. This part really hurt for us, because that is what we are so good at, especially Mark. Getting those scared and terrified dogs to relax, calm down, and trust us. We can't give her that and that is what made this transport emotionally difficult for us.

While she was in her crate, we kept hearing little noises from her, so we craned our necks around so we could check on he saw. Little Miss Shein was methodically and thoughtfully testing out the crate she was in. What was she testing it for you ask.... weaknesses. She was trying to escape again. She was pushing at the sides (it was the type of crate that was a plastic bottom and top that the seam was in the middle of the side) so she was pushing on each part of that seam to try and find a weekensss. We spoke to her in soft tones and tried to keep her soothed until we got to her new foster home.

Pulling up to the foster's house, we were quickly reminded of another sweet angel that we had met at this house. This was the beloved Anais' foster home. If you remember back to the December 4th entry called "The Close Call" about our first adoption event with Anais. Pulling up to the house put a big smile on my face and a warmth in my heart as we remembered our time with her. We knew that this foster was someone special and that Shein was in great hands and would be doing extremely well.
