Halloween Is the Scariest Night for Dogs: How to Keep Yours Safe

Image
Halloween Is the Scariest Night for Dogs: How to Keep Yours Safe For kids, Halloween is the best night of the year. For a lot of dogs, it is the worst. Think about it from their side. The doorbell rings fifty times in three hours. Strangers in masks and capes crowd the porch. The house fills with candy that smells amazing and could land them in the emergency vet. And every time the door opens, the outside world is right there, wide open. Every year, rescues and shelters brace for the same thing: a wave of lost, scared, and sick dogs in the days after Halloween. Almost all of it is preventable. Here is how to keep your dog safe, calm, and home where they belong. 1. Keep the candy bowl out of reach Chocolate is the one everyone knows about, and the darker it is, the more dangerous. But it is not the only threat in that bowl. Xylitol (sometimes listed as birch sugar). This sweetener shows up in sugar-free gum, mints, and some candies. Even a small amount can crash a dog's blood sug...

Why Fostering Saves More Than One Life

Image
Why Fostering Saves More Than One Life When most people think about fostering a dog, they imagine one life being saved. One dog leaves a shelter. One kennel opens up. One animal gets a second chance. And while all of that is true, it is only part of the story. Because fostering does not just save the life of the dog sleeping in your spare room, curled up on your couch, or nervously pacing around your kitchen on that first night. Fostering creates a ripple effect. It makes space. It buys time. It gives hope. It changes outcomes. And in ways both visible and invisible, it often saves more than one life. It saves the dog you bring home This is the life people see first. A foster dog leaves a stressful shelter environment and enters a home where they can finally exhale. They get rest. They get routine. They get safety. They get to be more than a kennel number or a sad face behind bars. For some dogs, that change is everything. A home environment can reveal who a dog really is. The dog who ...

2025... A Look Back

Image
As the year comes to a close, we find ourselves looking back—not at the mile markers, but at the moments. The early mornings when the world was still quiet and we were loading crates with coffee in hand. The late-night texts that started with “Are you up?” and ended with “We’re on our way.” The handoffs in parking lots that somehow felt like little miracles—one car door opening, another closing, and a dog’s whole future changing in between. This past year has reminded us that rescue isn’t just about the animals (even though they’re the reason we do it). It’s about people showing up. It’s about community. It’s about the kind of support that doesn’t always make headlines, but absolutely makes impact. We’re so grateful for every share, every comment, every donation, every foster application, every volunteer who said “yes,” and every rescue partner who trusted us. Every single bit of attention you helped bring to the rescue community mattered—because attention leads to action. Action leads...

Keeping Your Pet Active During the Winter Months ❄️🐾

Image
Keeping Your Pet Active  During the Winter Months   ❄️🐾 Winter may bring cozy nights and snow-filled fun, but for many pet owners, it also means shorter days, colder temperatures, and fewer opportunities for outdoor adventures. Keeping your pet active during the winter months is essential for their physical health and mental well-being. If your pup tends to slow down when the temperatures drop, here are some  easy and effective ways to ensure they’re getting enough exercise—even in the cold! How Much Exercise Does Your Pet Need? Every pet is different, but in general: 🐕  Dogs  – Most dogs need  30 minutes to 2 hours  of exercise per day, depending on their breed, age, and energy level. 🐈  Cats  – While cats are naturally less active, they still benefit from  daily play sessions  to keep them engaged and prevent boredom. If you notice weight gain, restlessness, destructive behavior, or excessive barking/meowing, your ...

The Often Overlooked and Forgotten

The Often Overlooked and Forgotten Gems:  Why Special Needs & Senior Dogs Deserve a Loving Home When people think of adopting a dog, they often picture a wiggly, bright-eyed puppy full of energy and curiosity. While puppies are wonderful, there’s an entire world of equally deserving dogs waiting in shelters— senior dogs and special needs dogs . These are the underdogs of adoption, often overlooked simply because of their age or unique challenges. But if you take a closer look, you’ll see that they are some of the most loving, grateful, and inspiring companions you could ever ask for.    The Beauty of Senior Dogs Senior dogs have lived lives full of experience, wisdom, and love. Many have known the warmth of a home before but, for reasons beyond their control, find themselves in shelters during their golden years. Others have spent most of their lives in rescue, never knowing what it’s like to have a family of their own.   But here’s the truth: senior dogs ...
