Keeping Your Pet Active During the Winter Months ❄️🐾

Keeping Your Pet Active During the Winter Months ❄️🐾

Winter may bring cozy nights and snow-filled fun, but for many pet owners, it also means shorter days, colder temperatures, and fewer opportunities for outdoor adventures. Keeping your pet active during the winter months is essential for their physical health and mental well-being. If your pup tends to slow down when the temperatures drop, here are some easy and effective ways to ensure they’re getting enough exercise—even in the cold!

How Much Exercise Does Your Pet Need?

Every pet is different, but in general:
🐕 Dogs – Most dogs need 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise per day, depending on their breed, age, and energy level.
🐈 Cats – While cats are naturally less active, they still benefit from daily play sessions to keep them engaged and prevent boredom.

If you notice weight gain, restlessness, destructive behavior, or excessive barking/meowing, your pet may not be getting enough exercise.

Tips to Keep Your Pet Active in Winter

1. Indoor Playtime & Games 🎾🏠

When it’s too cold to go outside, bring the fun indoors!
✅ Tug-of-War – A great way to burn energy without much space.
✅ Fetch in a Hallway – Clear a safe space and toss a toy to keep your pup moving.
✅ Hide-and-Seek – Hide treats or yourself and let your dog "hunt" for them.
✅ Obstacle Course – Set up chairs, tunnels, and objects for them to jump over or crawl under.
✅ Interactive Cat Toys – Use feather wands, laser pointers, or treat puzzles to keep cats entertained.

2. Outdoor Adventures (With Precautions!) ❄️🐾

Some dogs love the snow! If your pet enjoys winter weather, here’s how to make outdoor exercise safe:
✅ Short Walks, More Often – Break up long walks into shorter, more frequent outings.
✅ Bundle Up – Use a pet coat for short-haired breeds and booties to protect paws from ice and salt.
✅ Choose Safe Paths – Avoid heavily salted sidewalks and icy areas.
✅ Let Them Play in the Snow – Supervised romps in the yard or a park can be great fun and exercise!

3. Mental Stimulation = Exercise Too! 🧠🐶

Pets need to exercise their minds as much as their bodies! Keep them engaged with:
✅ Puzzle Feeders – Encourage problem-solving while they eat.
✅ Training Sessions – Work on new tricks or reinforce old ones.
✅ Scent Games – Hide treats or favorite toys and let them sniff them out.

4. Doggy Daycare or Playdates 🐕🐾

If your pup loves socializing, take them to:
✅ Doggy daycare – A great way to burn energy while playing with other dogs.
✅ Indoor dog parks – Some areas offer heated, safe spaces for off-leash fun.
✅ Playdates – Meet up with a friend’s dog for supervised play inside or outside.

5. Treadmill & Indoor Exercise Equipment 🏃‍♂️🐕

For high-energy dogs, consider:
✅ Treadmill Training – Start slow and let them walk at their own pace.
✅ Flirt Poles – A long pole with a rope toy attached to mimic chasing prey.
✅ Climbing & Jumping Exercises – Use stairs or low obstacles for agility work.

Keep Your Pet Active & Happy All Winter Long!

Winter may limit outdoor time, but with creativity and consistency, your pet can stay fit and happy all season long. Whether it’s indoor games, winter walks, or mental challenges, keeping them active will prevent boredom, maintain a healthy weight, and strengthen your bond. 🐾❄️

How does your pet stay active in winter? Let us know in the comments!

Well my wish came true from the last post. It snowed just like dad said that it was going to. He unfortunately forgot his phone when we went for our walks so there is no video of me playing the snow, but I of course did. It's my favorite thing to do in the winter. Even just the little dusting of snow we got the other day, still played in it.

I wanted to comment on the above lists of things to do when you want to exercise during the winter... one of my absolute favorite things dad and I do whenever we go out is what he calls a "SNIFFARI" (Sniff Safari). He lets me dictate where our walk takes us just by where my nose takes us. My nose is the leader during those walks. What he doesn't know maybe is that for every 15 minutes of sniffing we do, it is the same amount of energy used as going for an hour walk. Sniffing and processing all those scents is exhausting. He doesn't realize it but when we come in from those walks I am so tired, I just want to sleep!

REPOSTING: LETS FIND SWEET ANGEL LINDY A FUR-EVER HOME!!

SHE DESERVES IT!

Lindy

American Staffordshire Terrier Mixed Breed

This little powdered sugar piglet is SO ready to find her family! Once upon a time, Lindy was abandoned at a grooming salon, but thanks to her foster heroes, she never had to go to the shelter. We cannot believe she is still waiting for adoption; she is such a special sweet little girl!! Lindy is 4 years old, 51 pounds, housetrained, and has become great friends with her foster's resident dogs. We call her a powdered sugar donut because she can curl up into the tiniest ball when she wants to snuggle in somewhere. And, yes, occasionally, she snuggles up next to her foster's youngest, hoping for an extra snack to fall on the ground so she can (VERY HELPFULLY) offer her cleaning services. What a good girl! Lindy is an adorable, affectionate, chunky girl, and she's ready to find her forever home. Apply today to learn more about Lindy.

All dogs will be altered, microchipped, and receive age-appropriate vaccines prior to adoption. Please note that the listed location for this dog may not be accurate due to technical limitations of this database and we have transportation options available within 6 hours of NYC (so don't let location hold you back)!
