A Journey of Hope: Transporting Louie to Safety

Recently, I had the profound honor of transporting a dog named Louie who had been severely burned and found his way into the compassionate care of Second Chance Rescue. This brave little soul, despite his trauma, was on a journey to a better life, and I was privileged to be a part of it.

The journey began when I received him from another transporter who had brought him from the rescue center to The Bronx. She cautioned me that he was a bit man-reactive, and after seeing the extent of his injuries, it was clear why he might be wary of humans. His small body bore the marks of immense suffering, yet his spirit remained unbroken.  We spent some quality time getting to know each other in her backseat, before making the transfer into my vehicle.  He was very happy to just be left alone in the back seat for the duration of the trip… except for the ONE MOMENT where his curiosity led him to boop me on the nose!

My task was to relay him to his foster home in Madison, a place remarkably close to where I used to work. It felt like a sign that I was meant to be a part of his journey. His foster mom, an incredible woman who coordinates the cat rescues, was eagerly awaiting his arrival.

As soon as we arrived, the transformation was almost instantaneous. Despite his initial wariness, within minutes he began to show signs of the happy puppy he truly was. His foster mom's warmth and excitement were palpable, and it was clear that he felt safe and loved.  I was even privileged to get some follow-up photos the next day to confirm the happiness!

Watching him flourish in those first few moments was nothing short of magical. He went from a scared, hurt little dog to a joyful, affectionate pup. As I drove away, I glanced back and saw him hugging her leg, his eyes full of gratitude and happiness. It was a moment that assured me he was going to be OK.

Seeing Louie in a loving home, with someone who genuinely cared for him, was incredibly moving. It reminded me why rescues and transport efforts are so vital. Every dog deserves a second chance, and being a part of his journey was an experience I will never forget.

MEET LEO BIGHEART

When Leo's owner passed away, this little pup wound up at our city shelter. But a busy shelter is no place for seniors, and Leo needed a fresh start after losing the love of his life. We took him to our vets and discovered Leo has Chronic Valvular Disease, a condition that will require lifelong medication for his heart. He would love a peaceful home to cuddle close to his people and fall in love with another family. Leo weighs 23 pounds and gets along with other pups. Apply today to adopt Leo and his Bigheart.

All dogs will be altered, microchipped, and receive age-appropriate vaccines prior to adoption. Please note that the listed location for this dog may not be accurate due to technical limitations of this database and we have transportation options available within 6 hours of NYC (so don't let location hold you back)!

Interested in fostering or adopting?  Need more info on this dog?  The first step in the process is filling out an application on our website.

Transporting dogs is our passion but passions come at a cost. With the price of everything increasing, (gas, tolls, supplies, etc) we could use some help!

If you can, we would graciously accept some donation assistance. Venmo @dalind31
