Dogs who live past 15 have owners who do these 5 things differently during walks. (most people do the opposite)
1. They don’t rush their dog. Ever.
a. Most people walk at human pace. Fast. Efficient. Get it done.
But Dogs aren’t on your schedule.
b. They need time. To sniff. To process. To just exist. Rushing creates stress.
Stress shortens life.
c. Owners of old dogs walk slowly. Match the dog’s pace. Not theirs.
Even if it takes twice as long.
d. The walk is for the dog. Not for your step count.
2. They change the route and let the dog choose direction sometimes.
a. Same path every day? Your dog’s brain goes numb.
New smells stimulate the mind. Keep it sharp. Keep it young.
b. And when the dog pulls left instead of right? Let them lead sometimes.
Giving them control builds confidence. Reduces anxiety.
c. A confident dog is a healthier dog. Mix it up. New streets. New parks.
Let them explore.
3. They never yank the lead or force the dog to move.
a. Pulling hard on the lead damages the neck. Creates stress. Builds fear.
b. If your dog stops to sniff a lamppost for two minutes, let them.
Don’t drag them away. Don’t jerk the lead. Wait.
They’ll move when they are ready.
c. Owners of old dogs are patient. They undertand: the walk isn’t about distance.
Its about mental stimulation. And mental stimulation keeps dogs alive longer.
4. They put the phone away. Completely.
a. Walk through any park. Everyone’s scrolling. Texting. On calls.
Not watching their dog.
b. But dogs know when you’re distracted. It stresses them.
They want your attention. Your presence.
c. Owners of old dogs leave phones in pocklets. They watch their dog.
Notice the limp before it gets worse. See the hesitation before it becomes fear.
d. Present owners raise healthy dogs.
5. They talk to their dog during the walk.
a. Not commands. Conversation. “Good boy.” “Look at that bird.”
“You’re doing great!”
b. Dogs don’t understand every word. But they understand tone.
Connection. Being spoken to like they matter.
c. This builds the bond. And strong bonds reduce stress.
Lower heart rates. Extend lives. Talk to your dog. They’re listening.
Here’s the truth most people miss:
Your dog doesn’t need a long walk.
They need a walk where they feel seen.
Where they feel safe. Where they feel loved.
That’s what keeps them alive. Not the distance. The connection.
Stella is almost 6 now. Dobby is 11. Every walk with them is a gift.
We don’t rush them. Ever. We let them sniff every lamppost.
We talk to them like they understand every word. Because maybe they do.
And even if they don’t, they know we’re there. That’s what matters.
Your dog is watching you. Make them feel like they matter. Because they do!
