Inside NYC Second Chance Rescue: How They Save Critically Injured Dogs
“Giving Dogs a Real Second Chance — Inside NYC Second Chance Rescue”
Every once in a while, you encounter an organization whose mission aligns perfectly with your own rescue-travel spirit. For me, that organization is NYC Second Chance Rescue. They don’t just find dogs homes—they pull them back from the brink, rehabilitate them, and then send them into families and lives they deserve. Let’s go behind the scenes.
Who They Are & What They Do
NYC Second Chance Rescue is a 501(c)(3) foster-based nonprofit founded in 2009 that rescues and rehabilitates critically injured, neglected, and abused dogs and cats, particularly those deemed high-risk for euthanasia. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
Since inception, they have saved over 17,000 lives (dogs + cats) across the New York and tri-state region. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
They operate an Adoption Center in Long Island City, NY, open by appointment to approved adopters, and a Rescue Center in Verplank, NY, not open to the public. They offer volunteer programs and humane education tied to their mission. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
Why Their Work Matters
Many rescues pick up the “easy cases.” NYC Second Chance Rescue intentionally goes for the hard ones — animals with critical injuries, severe neglect or high-kill-shelter risk. That’s where the biggest transformation happens.
The scale: Rescuing thousands of animals, plus operating in a high-density urban environment (NYC) where resources, space and adoption competition are all more challenging.
They combine rescue + rehabilitation + adoption + education. Their adoption center includes a “cat lounge & suites” to support felines, and they’re building a formal humane-education program for students K-12. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
A Typical Rescue Story
Here’s how a case might play out:
A dog from a high-kill shelter or found injured is brought in.
They receive vet care, possibly surgery, rehabilitation, foster placement.
Volunteers and foster homes provide socialization, behavior support, medical follow-through.
Once ready, the dog goes to the Adoption Center or is matched with an adopter from their network.
Follow-up support, and the dog begins a new life.
Ways You Can Get Involved
Adopt – Visit their adoption page. They serve residents of NY, NJ, CT, PA, DE, MA, ME, MD, Northern VA and the District of Columbia (anywhere within a 6 hour drive of NYC). (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
Foster – Open your home temporarily; fosters are vital for animals in rehab and socialization. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
Volunteer – At their LIC adoption center (dog-walking, cat socializing), help at adoption or funraising events, or transport dogs and cats from foster to foster, to and from the vet for appointments, or to forever homes. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
Donate – Monthly giving supports ongoing vet bills, surgeries, and daily care. (NYC Second Chance Rescue)
Share Stories – Become an ambassador: share rescue successes, raise awareness of injured/neglected dogs, and promote the “Because They Matter” message.
Community Education – They have humane-education programs for schools; this is a great tie-in for your own workbook and outreach projects.
Challenges They Face (and How You Can Help)
Urban rescues often face space and resource constraints: housing, vet care, foster homes.
High medical costs for critically injured animals.
Matching high-need dogs with responsible adopters (requires education, follow-up, training).
Ensuring long-term volunteer/foster pipelines.
You can support by shining a light on these issues in your blog: show behind-the-scenes costs, highlight a “rescue of the month” case (with data, before/after metrics, cost broken down), and illustrate how your readers can plug in.

Consider becoming a monthly donor — even $10/month can save lives.
Sign up to foster if you have space, love and patience.
- Sign up to be a transporter. They are always in need of expanding their network.
Use your own network: if you’re a real-estate agent, local business owner or community leader, add a rescue highlight to your website or newsletter.
Because they matter. That simple phrase captures the essence of what we both believe.
