Sharing the Love: How Our Dogs Became Neighborhood Favorites πΎπ
One of the beautiful things about having dogs is how they bring people together. Dogs have this magical way of making connections, sparking smiles, and creating moments of joy—even with people they’ve never met before.
For us, that connection blossomed just one block away at the local assisted living facility. Over time, the residents there have sort of “adopted” our pups as their own, and it has turned into one of the most heartwarming parts of our daily routine.
πΆ The Unexpected Bond
It started simply enough—walking past as residents sat outside, waving hello. Soon enough, they began asking to pet the dogs, and our pups quickly realized this was a stop full of love and attention. Now, it’s a regular thing: the residents light up when they see us coming, and the dogs practically race to greet them.
πͺ Treats and Tail Wags
To make the visits even more special, we bring along little bags of dog treats. The residents love handing them out, and our dogs are more than happy to oblige with wagging tails and kisses. It gives everyone a role to play, and the joy on both ends of the leash is contagious.
❤️ Why It Matters
Moments like these remind us how pets aren’t just family members—they’re also community builders. Dogs don’t care about age, background, or circumstance. They care about kindness, attention, and love. For the residents, those few minutes of petting a dog or handing out a treat can be the highlight of the day. For us, it’s a reminder of the bigger picture: our pets can bring happiness not just to us, but to everyone around them.
π Tips for Sharing Your Pet With Your Community
Check with staff first if you’re visiting a care facility to be sure dogs are welcome.
Bring safe treats that fit your dog’s diet, so others can join in giving without worry. Don't rely on the residents to provide the treats. This way you can control what your dog is getting and doesn't put the financial burden on the resident.
Keep visits short and sweet so dogs don’t get overwhelmed and residents stay comfortable.
Make it routine—even a quick hello once a week can brighten someone’s day.
Alter your route—even if the residents aren’t outside, walk your dogs past the meetup spot anyway. It gives everyone (dogs and humans!) a sense of excitement, knowing they might be there. And if they’re not, you can still give your dogs the treats yourself so no one feels disappointed.

πΎ Final Thought
Our pups may live under our roof, but in many ways, they belong to the neighborhood, too. Watching them bring comfort, joy, and laughter to the residents down the block is one of the best reminders of why dogs truly are man’s (and woman’s) best friend.
Sometimes, the simplest acts—like sharing your dog’s love—make the biggest difference. π

***Side note about Miss Indie... I had the pleasure of transporting her a few weeks ago and she was a perfect little angel in the car. She sat there peacefully with her front paws crossed in the back seat looking at everything all around her. She was the pefect passenger.***
