Who are we kidding... a fail was only a matter of time!

Today turned out to be an incredibly heartwarming and eventful day! 🐾 We eagerly volunteered to transport two dogs to Astoria, Queens, only a few blocks apart. It's a routine we've done before, so we felt prepared for the task. But then, just as we thought our day couldn't get any better, we received a message about a third little pup needing transport to the Adoption Center in Long Island City, just 15 minutes away. Without hesitation, we said yes to the unexpected addition. πŸš—πŸ’¨

Our car was bustling with excitement and anticipation! I took the wheel, accompanied by Seth, a charming 30-pound grey and white 6-month-old pitbull mix, while Mark found himself sandwiched between a 75-pound gentle giant named Goat and a 10-pound black micro schnauzer in a cozy crate. 🐢❤️

Typically, our transports originate from down south, often from states like Georgia or Louisiana, and today was no exception. However, Goat's journey was a bit different. He came from a temporary foster home in Lancaster, PA, making his way to Queens. Thanks to the collaboration of fellow transporters like us, we were able to tag team his trip and ensure he safely reached his new foster home. 🀝

Initially, the atmosphere in the car was lively, to say the least. But with Mark's intuitive nature and calming demeanor, any tension dissipated, and harmony soon prevailed. It's moments like these that remind us of the power of compassion and the profound bond between humans and animals. 🌟

Traffic was heavier than normal, but that was of no concern for us since that meant more time with our travel companions. Over the George Washington Bridge, we went cruising right along. Along our route, we like to keep our intended pup receivers informed of our timeframe to stave off any potential issues. Even though we hit some traffic, we were still making good time. So when we checked in, and fortunately, we did, drop-off #1 was not going to be ready for us for almost an hour. ⏱️

Pivoting, we contacted drop-off #2 to see if we could move them up, and luckily they were ready and waiting for us. Seth was more than excited to get out of the car and settle in with his new foster family. Seeing how Seth was only a few blocks away from Goat, it didn't take up too much of our time. We waited for about 15 min more for drop-off #1 to be ready. During that 15 min, we kept Goat and Nico occupied by playing with them with some toys or taking Goat for a walk up and down the block. The wait was up, and Goat was off to his foster family. 2 down, 1 more to go! 🐾

Heading towards the Adoption Center, we were able to take Nico out of his crate and really get to know him - let me tell you, he is the sweetest and most adorable little guy there ever was. All 10 pounds of him got settled and curled up on Mark's lap and quickly went to sleep. We arrived at the center, and while we were trying to connect with our contact there, I heard someone yelling from across the street. Wouldn't you know it, it happens to be Jennifer Brooks, the co-founder of NYC Second Chance Rescue! She wondered what we were doing there and we showed her Nico and said dropping him off even though we would much rather take him home with us, but the timing didn't work out yet for that. πŸ’”

See, what I hadn't told you yet was that our roommate fell in love with the little guy when I showed him his picture (our household has a soft spot for Mini or Micro Schnauzers) and put in an adoption application for him the day before. He was still waiting to go through the process such as interviews, references, etc. When Jennifer heard this, she was able to make some calls and get the whole process fast-tracked for us, and after a short wait and lots of phone calls, our roommate was approved, and we could take Nico home with us! 🏑❤️

I don't know if I would consider this a Transport Fail because technically we didn't adopt him, our roommate did. πŸ˜‰ Now, I know what you might be thinking, what is a transport fail? A transport fail or a foster fail sounds like a bad thing, but it is far from it. A "foster fail" is a term used affectionately within the animal rescue community to describe a situation where a foster caregiver becomes so attached to the animal they are fostering that they end up adopting them themselves. It's a lighthearted way of acknowledging the deep bond that forms between foster caregivers and the animals in their care, even when the original intention was temporary fostering. πŸ’–

We have transported 81 dogs over 59 trips since we first started volunteering, and while we have come close a few times... Nico stole all our hearts, and he is our first transport fail, and we couldn't be happier. 🌈🐾

All dogs will be altered, microchipped, and receive age-appropriate vaccines prior to adoption. I leave them alone for 5 minutes and they do what?

I was sound asleep in bed taking my afternoon nap like I always do (it's not easy staying this beautiful) and in comes Dad quickly startling me awake. He gave me a kiss on the head and then ran upstairs and put the gate up across the doorway. I stumbled out of bed and ran up the stairs to see what was going on and I stopped dead in my tracks. On the other side of the gate was another Dobby. I knew it wasn't Dobby because he was standing there next to me on our side of the gate. But it looked just like him. Dad came over and said that this was Nico and he was going to be living with us from now on. That we are his family now. I gave him a few sniffs. He smells funny but so did I when I first got here too. I am happy that he is here and that he has a home now. I know all too well what that is like to not know where you are going to sleep that night and be scared but now, thanks to my dads and my family, I know I am safe and loved and I don't have to worry about that anymore. Now, Nico doesn't either.

Welcome home, Nico. Welcome Home!
