A Transport To Remember

Mark and I always say that we love transporting dogs for Second Chance Rescue and that is always for the same reasons: 1. We wanted to do something to give back to the rescue community 2. We want to give a dog a safe, loving, and quiet ride to get them one step closer to their forever home 3. We get to play and meet lots of dogs!

Today's transport is one that I will hold extra special in my heart and will further solidify why we do what we do. Normally, I drive and Mark is sitting in the back entertaining the pup during our trip. Today's was a duo with one going to the Bronx and the second to Connecticut. Elsa was a "pocket pitty" and was so scared when we first got her. She sat by my side in the passenger seat and finally settled down by sitting on the armrest with her head in the crook of my elbow.

Mark had the fun job of spending the first part of the trip with Bon Bon, a beautiful and sweet Momma Pitty. Mark is always the fan favorite when it comes to the dogs. They always love him and snuggle up with him in the back. For the first part of the trip, she had her face pressed in between the door and the front seat and was staring at me from behind.

While Mark was helping the foster into his place with Elsa and her food, I got the chance to officially meet Bon Bon and this was the result...

So, needless to say, Bon Bon chose me to be her car companion. All you could hear in the car was her tail thwacking against the back seat of the car because she was so happy. I got an hour straight of snuggles, kisses, and the best thing in the world a large deep puppy sigh, signaling that she was relaxing. About 10 minutes into the second leg of our trip, she half-climbed into my lap and put her head down on my other knee.

Now, if you haven't ever had the experience of having a dog you just met, that came from a not-good home situation, that started out totally terrified, just melt into your lap and relax with a HUGE SIGH.... you haven't lived yet. Feeling her just relax in my arms brought a tear to my eye and then I too relaxed and we fell asleep.

I have said it before and I will say it again and again and again, dogs will tell you everything, what they need, if they are scared, happy, sad, etc.... we just have to listen. She said that she wanted me, so we adjusted and swapped roles this trip and it made it my most enjoyable transport to date. We just need to listen!

I just heard my dads talking and they were telling a story about the transport they did today and how you just need to listen to a dog, they tell you everything they need. This is so true. For instance, when I want to go outside I will walk up to Dad, sit down like a good girl, and then stare at him, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare then I will scoot a little closer to him and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare then I will scoot closer still and sometimes put my head on his knee and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare. He finally gets the hint and gets up and takes me out. This staring thing really seems to work with them too. When they get french fries with lunch or dinner, I do the same thing and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare, and stare and eventually, I will get one. So, yes, please listen to your dog or you may miss out on what they are telling you and it could be something very important, like getting a fry!

Meet Triscuit, an adorable beagle mix who was found starving and needed proper vetting and plenty of TLC to get back on her paws. She is a typical beagle, always sniffing and exploring, and she gets along great with other dogs. She has the iconic beagle howl, and she'll let it out when she's excited! Triscuit is a sweet, easygoing girl looking for a happy home. Complete an application today to bring Triscuit home.
