The Importance of Having Your Dog Microchipped with Real Life Scenario
What is Microchipping?
Microchipping is a simple, safe, and effective technology that involves implanting a tiny chip, about the size of a grain of rice, under the skin of your pet, usually between the shoulder blades. This chip contains a unique identification number that can be read by a scanner. When a lost dog is found and scanned, the identification number appears and can be used to retrieve the owner's contact information from a pet recovery database.
Why Microchip Your Dog?
Increased Chances of Recovery
The most compelling reason to microchip your dog is the significantly increased chances of being reunited with them if they ever get lost. Tags and collars can fall off or be removed, but a microchip is a permanent form of identification. Statistics show that microchipped dogs are much more likely to be returned to their owners than those without microchips.
Quick and Painless Process
Microchipping is a quick procedure that can be done during a regular veterinary visit. It is no more painful than a standard vaccination, and once it's done, it lasts a lifetime. There’s no need for any kind of maintenance or adjustment.
Peace of Mind
Knowing that your dog has a microchip can provide immense peace of mind. If your dog ever gets lost, you’ll have the reassurance that there’s a reliable way for them to be identified and returned to you. This is especially important for those who travel with their pets or live in areas prone to natural disasters.
International Recognition
For those who love to travel with their pets, microchips are internationally recognized, which means your dog can be identified even if you are abroad. This is particularly important for complying with the pet travel regulations of many countries.
How to Ensure Your Microchip Works Effectively
Keep Your Contact Information Updated
A microchip is only as good as the information linked to it. Make sure to register the microchip with a reputable pet recovery database and keep your contact information up to date. If you move or change your phone number, updating these details is crucial.
Regularly Check the Microchip
It’s a good practice to have your vet scan the microchip during your pet’s annual checkup to ensure it’s still functioning properly. This quick check can give you peace of mind that your pet’s form of identification is active and working.
Combine with Other Forms of ID
While microchipping is highly effective, it should be used in conjunction with other forms of identification, like a collar and tag. This combination can provide multiple ways for someone to contact you if they find your lost pet.
Conclusion
Microchipping your dog is a straightforward step you can take to protect your beloved pet. It offers a permanent, secure method of identification that greatly increases the chances of reunification if your dog ever gets lost. With the procedure being quick, safe, and relatively inexpensive, the question isn’t why you should microchip your dog, but rather, why wouldn’t you? Taking this simple step can make a significant difference in your life and the safety of your pet.
This story was told to me standing in a rescue center, during an adoption day event!
One of the volunteers that we know was driving across the Grand Central Parkway (GCP) to get to the Long Island City event. She’s a veteran volunteer and in a fun twist, Doug delivered her adopted dog to her and that was the start! Here she is now also volunteering and working the event today. She’s on her way and across lanes of traffic on the Grand Central Parkway, darts a white poodle!! The GCP is exactly what it sounds; a big, scary, "no safe spaces" roadway and this little dog is running for the side of the road! So, she quickly and safely pulls over and tries to corral the dog from getting on the roadway, but it does. Another driver pulls over and helps to try to block traffic and help get the dog into a safe space for capture. After some additional time and patience, the dog is captured! She gets the leash* that she always keeps in her car, for emergencies, and leashes the dog successfully, gaining its safety and trust a little in the process. The other good Samaritan asks, “What should we do with the dog now”? She replied, “Well… I just happen to be on my way to volunteer at a rescue center”! So the little white dog came along with her for the ride to visit Second Chance Rescue! The lost pup was chipped, and luckily the Second Chance Rescue's Adoption Center has a microchip reader. They could scan the chip, call the owner who was FRANTIC by that time, and have a happy ending to this story, with pup reunited with family! They came over in an Uber as quickly as possible and were extremely grateful for how the situation played out and how caring our volunteer had been in the situation. This is another lifesaving success story because of someone taking the time to be kind!
Just in case you were curious about the Grand Central Parkway...
*Always have a good, strong, high quality slip lead in your car handy… just in case! I recommend one like this, that is also as brightly colored as possible.
MEET DEMI
Demi's owner passed away, and when the family came to the home, they put Demi outside, saying they don't want her. Thankfully, a neighbor stepped up for this precious girl, offering her a big bowl of food while seeking rescue assistance. Now, Demi has been living in a foster home, ready to start a new life with a loving family. She is so sweet and very friendly with people and dogs, but tends to chase kitties, so we do not recommend feline friends for Demi. Learn more about this peach and apply today to bring Demi home.
