Dancing the Tripod Tango

The Story of Our First "Tri-Pawed" Tripod Pup

Hello bloggers, Mark here of the duo!!  Doug is the social media champion and creative inspiration of us, and I just can’t be bothered most of the time, ha!  However, this week’s pup is one of my favorites, so I’d like to tell you our tale of transport with Blu!

When you do transports, it’s more moving parts than you would think!  Some pickups are from homes, some are from transports, some are from PetSmart!  Second Chance Rescue (SCR) has some amazing coordinators that just communicate and facilitate.  We couldn’t transport without them!  Why am I telling you all this?  Because sometimes the best laid plans just don’t happen the way you would expect (and plan for)!  We had a flawless coordination/plan and pickup, but a little hiccup on the drop off side for the first time.  This is the story of Blu – but who will forever be known as our first “Tripod” :-)

We started this pick up at our usually south-to-north transport van pickup spot on I-95.  We had a small number of transports under our belt at this time and knew to have some extra supplies on hand. (Those "extra supplies" have turned into a packed full-sized backpack that is full of multiple sizes of harnesses, collars, regular leashes, slip leads, seat belt attachments, treats, toys, poop bags, wipes etc.... because you just never know!)  We didn’t know what exactly would fit Blu – a 65lb, barrel chested, wide-headed, pure MUSCLE dog comes bounding out of the van!  We happened to have a padded transport harness that fit on him very well, padding his chest where it would pull the most and bind behind his leg on each side successfully.  Wow - did we need it!!  He was, for only having three legs, all muscle and very well accustomed to getting around his own way.  He is the type of dog that would be offended to being called disabled! He would be considered very “handi-capable”!

No motivation was needed to get this big guy moving – we were off to the races at that point!  He was… a bit of a handful, but 110% lovable and just was so incredibly happy to be with people.  I must tell you – this dog learned to live every day to the fullest and he just extruded it every second.  I (usually) get choked up thinking about what these dogs went through to get them to us at this exact moment, but being able to be a loving person to these dogs is the best feeling ever.  Today, this tripod, was the embodiment of joy and happy to be alive.  His spirit to this day has been memorable and will always be one of my favorites!  My face was licked about a hundred times ear to ear in the duration of the car ride to Brooklyn with that giant tongue – wait till you see the pictures!

So, after all that gushing, where’s the conflict in this story?  Well, it became a little nerve-wracking for the humans in this story when communication with the destination person started with “Oh, well I’m not home – I won’t be for a while yet - at least an hour and a half. I am still at work. ”…………. What do you mean you aren’t home?!  We have a transport dog, in Brooklyn, bouncing off the walls and we must just wait around?!  Once we found a suitable location to spend some time, this is where having supplies comes in handy again!  We took a food and water break and then, my favorite hour(s) goes by!!!  This dog jumps… and runs… and jumps and runs and jumps and jumps and by the end of the time, I’m not even sure how long we were waiting at that point ha ha, I’m TIRED!  He’s tired (for the moment) but we’re both extremely happy, grinning from ear to ear.

Blu’s new foster currently had another tripod and has had a few in the past she said. I don’t really remember much handing him off – I was crying as we pulled away that day for sure!  He was just a lot of fun; he was A LOT!  The orange coat I was wearing became my “transport coat” that day and it was all, totally, completely, and wonderfully worth it.  I hope you also watch the video and enjoy the pictures.  He’s just one of those inspiration dogs, and I hope his story can inspire you too!
