Nobody Warns You About the Life You Have to Relearn After Losing a Dog

Nobody Warns You About the Life You Have to Relearn After Losing a Dog People warn you that losing a dog will break your heart. What they do not warn you about is everything that happens afterward. Nobody tells you how strange it feels when you no longer need to fill their water bowl. How long it takes before you stop instinctively checking the floor before pushing your chair back. How you will open the door and, for half a second, expect someone to be waiting on the other side. How suddenly you have extra time in your day that you never wanted. Because when a dog dies, you do not only lose someone you love. You lose an entire way of living. Your Life Had Quietly Been Built Around Them We rarely realize how much of our daily lives revolve around our dogs until they are gone. Wake up. Let the dog out. Breakfast. Medication. Walk. Make sure they have water. Come home because they have been alone long enough. Dinner. Another walk. One last trip outside before bed. And woven between all th...

Losing Dobby: Grieving a Pet Who Was Family

Losing Dobby: Grieving a Pet Who Was Family It has been a little while since we have posted, and the truth is, life has been heavy. The day after Father’s Day, we said goodbye to our sweet Dobby after a nine-month battle with congestive heart failure. When Dobby was first diagnosed, we were told we might have six months left with him. Whether they shared your life for months or many years, the bond we form with our pets is deep, pure, and unconditional. When they’re gone, the silence they leave behind can be overwhelming. Grieving the loss of a pet is real, valid, and often misunderstood. This post is for anyone who has had to say goodbye—and for those who will one day walk this difficult path. 🐾 Why Pet Loss Hurts So Much Pets are there for our best and worst days. They don’t judge, hold grudges, or walk away. They love with their whole hearts, every single day. Because of this, the  grief we feel after losing a pet  can feel as intense—if not more so—than other forms of loss. And yet, many people feel they must grieve in silence. “It was just a dog,” or “You can always get another cat,” are statements that minim...
